NGO to Social Enterprise. Challenges of the transition and how to make it work

We all know that – in this era of depleted investment stocks and tightened belt buckles – donor funds are becoming increasingly scarce. We’re also all aware of the ever-present need for ‘sustainability’ and the importance of reducing risks of over reliance on donations. This is why many traditional NGOs look at ways of generating their own revenues. Methods vary, as does the scale: ranging from small scale products for local vendors, to establishing full blown differentiated operations.

But what does it really take to start income generating activities whilst managing the challenges of a social mission? What are the challenges, risks and success factors for substainable impact? What about legal, financial and management structures? How to manage transition from NGO to Social Enterprise?

In this brief introduction to the potential benefits, challenges and changes needed for your NGO when considering the development of income generating activities, we will introduce basic themes of changes in stakeholder language and organisation structure, the importance of market research, taxation, legal and HR issues and the key areas for success and failure.
Thanks to years of experience of working with NGOs, social enterprises and transitioned organisations in Cambodia, the Impact Hub team have taken learnings from a wide range of organisations across the sector to develop a unique insight into this important topic for sustainable impact.
